The proposed study aims to analyse whether there are solid technical and economic arguments that justify promoting a trans-Pyrenean hydrogen connection through Irun.

To this end, it is essential to characterise the potential for hydrogen production and consumption on both sides of the border, which will enable the real interest and viability of such infrastructure to be assessed. The aim is therefore to identify the key players in the industrial and energy sectors located in the area of interest and to show the potential demand and supply of hydrogen, as well as to provide relevant information for decision-making regarding trans-Pyrenean hydrogen connections, with a focus on the connection via Irun.

It is part of the European project called PHYRENE, Development of the cross-border hydrogen value chain in the Pyrenees, approved under the first call for proposals of the INTERREG VI-A Spain-France-Andorra Programme 2021-2027 (POCTEFA 2021-2027).

The main objective of the PHYRENE project is to support the development and consolidation of the renewable hydrogen value chain on a cross-border scale, as well as to promote the identification and exploitation of business, research and institutional synergies that will ensure the region’s energy transition.
